Sarah Watson is based in Grantham, Lincolnshire. She holds regular 8-week courses in a variety of subjects from portraiture to abstraction and on themes as diverse as Focusing On Light and Creating In Colour. Drawing from her passion for the history of art as well as her own artistic practice, Sarah brings an exciting, fun and friendly approach to her classes, encouraging experimentation and challenging artists to push outside of their comfort zones. Since the pandemic, her classes have mostly moved to Zoom, a format which has been such a success with her students that they have voted unanimously to keep learning online. The exception to this rule is Sarah’s monthly life drawing workshops which take place at the spacious and modern Gonerby Memorial Hall.
Her classes and workshops embrace an exciting roster of media to explore throughout the year, including oil painting, charcoal, watercolours, inks and pastels. She organizes group trips to exhibitions all over the UK, always encouraging lively discussion. The Summer months are devoted to en plein air landscape painting where students can not only join Sarah in her natural habitat at various beautiful Lincolnshire views, but also in her annual residential painting trips around the UK and Europe.
For her own work, Sarah primarily explores the beauty and dynamism of the natural landscape, travelling to the most stunning and diverse areas of the UK to paint her expressive semi-abstract oil paintings. She is represented by Gallery6, Newark who have hosted two month long solo exhibitions of her work, in 2021 and most recently her Iceland Landscapes show in October 2023.
She has also exhibited in one woman shows in Grantham, London and the Lake District, featured in the Sky Arts Landscape Artist Of The Year TV programme in 2016, and was accepted for membership of the exclusive Lincolnshire Artists’ Society with whom she regularly exhibits.
Born in Oakham, Rutland, in 1972, Sarah graduated from De Montfort University with a First Class degree in Combined Arts in 1994, specializing in Abstract Painting.
After 15 years working in the music industry, she settled in Grantham to devote her time entirely to her own art and that of her talented students who, she says, inspire her as much as the countryside around her.
